The new Lumen restaurant has been hailed as a unique achievement in design, engineering and construction. The restaurant and its outdoor park spaces have also served as a catalyst for further growth and renewal along Detroit’s Grand River Avenue.

MOD Interiors created the architectural millwork that makes the space such an interesting and engaging gathering place. The Architectural Woodwork Institute named MOD as their 2019 Standard of Excellence Award winner (hospitality category) for the Lumen project.

The finished product is a beautiful use of fine Sapele wood elements and an excellent example of how MOD Interiors met the challenge of crafting the structure’s complex design elements. MOD provided mockups, layout templates and job site supervision as needed throughout the project.

The custom ceiling panels and its custom metal brackets were especially challenging because other systems shared the ceiling space. MOD used its in-house CNC system to etch a reflected image of the ceiling elements onto 1/8″ thick fiberboard that was installed on the floor and used as a reference by all the trades involved.

With such an accurate template in place, electricians and HVAC installers could use lasers to pinpoint locations and complete their work before the beautifully finished ceiling was installed. This collaborative process fostered open communication and a spirit of continuous improvement that helped everyone create work of the highest standard.
